Cardiff’s Greek community began with the sea. Greek ship-owners, captains and sailors came to Cardiff, Barry and Newport for the coal export trade, and they first met as a community in 1873 (St Nicholas parish history). Greek Market now delivers Greek food across Cardiff and South Wales, with more than 75 orders to CF postcodes in the last two years. We’re an online Greek supermarket, with no shop in Wales.
St Nicholas, Butetown
The Greek Orthodox Church of St Nicholas, off Bute Street, was built in 1906 and opened for worship in 1919, largely paid for by Greek seafarers. Cadw lists it at Grade II as a rare Byzantine-style building in Wales (Cadw listing). Its dedication fits: St Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors, and his feast day on 6 December is a big name day for every Nikos and Nikoleta. The parish runs a hall opened in 2012 and is home to the Greek-Cypriot Brotherhood in Wales and the Hellenic School in South Wales.
